Interview with Arthur Hills

How did you get started with golf course design?
I began my work in golf course design while I was running a successful commercial landscaping design business in Toledo, Ohio. With a long-time interest in the game of golf and a landscape architecture degree from the University of Michigan, getting into golf course design was a natural progression that led to a full-time career.
Do you have a favorite design?
I do not have a favorite course. Each course is looked at as a parent would their children. Children (and golf courses) are all different with their own unique characteristics. But they are each special in their own way and you love them the same.
How many courses have you designed?
I have designed over 180 courses in the United States and in several foreign locations. My first full design effort began in 1966 at Brandywine Country Club in Maumee, Ohio. This was a 27-hole course that opened in 1969.

A large number of our new designs are part of golf course community developments. We work hard with the land planners and the client's team to achieve the right balance between the golf course and the homes surrounding the holes. We are very proud of the fact that studies have shown that our designs have helped sell a tremendous amount of real estate through the years.

The firm also does master plan renovation work and has been called upon to refine or renovate more than 125 courses including renowned clubs throughout the United States along with some international locations.

How long have you worked with Steve Forrest?
Steve Forrest joined me after graduating from Virginia Tech in 1979 with a degree in landscape architecture. Steve was named a principal in 1999 and the firm's name was changed to Arthur Hills / Steve Forrest and Associates.
